It’s the first thing you see as you enter the Great Park Sports Park in Irvine over this long weekend, where hundreds of athletes from all over the country are competing in tournaments during this Presidents Day holiday. The Great Park Balloon, bearing a tribute to the late Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and two of her Mamba teammates and coach who perished in the Jan. 26 helicopter crash in Calabasas, towers over the soccer, baseball and softball fields.

The Mamba Sports Academy logo previously didn’t include the numbers and initials it now has. The logo was modified by the sports academy to include Bryant’s jersey numbers 8 and 24, Gianna’s number 2, Payton Chester’s jersey number 14, and Alyssa Altobelli’s jersey number 5, as well as the initials of Mamba Coach Christina Mauser.

The balloon tribute, a collaboration between FivePoint, developer of the Orange County Great Park, and the city of Irvine, will be in place for several days and will be lit in the night sky beginning this evening, Feb. 15, according to a report in the Orange County Register.
